I seem to have a number of coins on order - for the Canada150, but nothing really has arrived. Has anybody received some of the coins? GP 3 ounce silver, or the clock coin? I feel like I ordered them at least 2 weeks ago, if not back in May for the June release.

@john100, so is the difference between a commissioned coin and a non-commissioned coin the fact that part of the fixed costs of producing it is covered by another party? Would the coin still be produced if it wasn't commissioned? I guess I'm wondering what the economic incentive would be for the RCM and the commissioning party? Assuming the RCM has decided that a coin design is going to be produced. Presumably, the RCM chose to produce it because it would popular and be profitable. Why would it choose to have it commissioned? It would reduce the profitability of the RCM to do so. Unless there was a high uncertainty that they could recoup their fixed costs, then commissioning it would serve as a hedge. On the other hand, if the RCM decided not to move forward with a coin design, but another party believed it would be popular/profitable, then allowing a commission would make sense. It is a lower or no risk for the RCM, and the commissioning party receives the bulk of sales and (possibly) takes on the risk of holding the unsold inventory. Thanks for the info.

Why wouldn't the RCM like commissioned coins, they almost always create a false sellout, the RCM saves on dies and other set up fees and the other party believes they have half of the mintage of an instant sellout. It does create a situation where a theme gets severely over done like the smiling, swimming, jumping beaver coins or the recent Big coin series and soon afterwards the colour version sinking both series.

Yes - but if it's done right as is the peace tower clock coin then regardless commissioned - good theme good quality low mintage is all that matters.

Shopping Channel has the puzzle coins right now. They have 300 of the 800 coins available and delivery is in October. Commissioned!
BTW, the whole thing is one big capsule.

TSC also has the 2oz GITD. Really confusing that the Mint rep on air is saying neither this coin nor the puzzle coin is sold out at the Mint. Both are sold out on the mint.ca website. Maybe there are some at the boutiques?

Practically all of the Canada 150 coins are commissioned coins by Steve Bromberg. All of them can be found either at the Shopping Channel or CC&C despite selling out at the RCM. Pass on all them except for the GITD Canada Day coin. No point in spending large amounts of money on coins that drop in value as soon as you get the them. That is especially true of commissioned coins. Can't think of a single commissioned coin that appreciated in value.

Quote: Was the Puzzle Coin commissioned? I don't see it for sale anywhere. My opinion? Yes it was. I seriously doubt TSC had 300 (and CC&C had a bunch too) of the 800 if it was not commissioned. Bromberg said 'we' had just about half the total mintage. The GITD 2oz was almost certainly a Bromberg commissioned coin too based on his comments and the airtime it was given. Despite other opinions, I doubt the Peace Tower clock was commissioned since TSC only had about 30 pieces. What I found really sad about the TSC 2 hour show was that about 100 minutes of the 120 were spent on pushing 'restrike' medals produced by Bromberg's own mint. Because he is associated so much with the RCM, IMO this is just one further step towards Franklin Mint type wares and won't be good for the hobby.
