I find it somewhat amusing that I have trouble remembering what I did recently, and in my Mind's Eye recall my 1st U.S. Mints purchase, 5 Proof Sets in the summer of 1975 for $7.00 a set. Back then all the hype was the three new Dual Dated Bicentennial Coins.
In the 42 year's that followed, I found most of the Mints Mint & Proof Sets are valued less than the Issue price, and the $7.00 Set in 1975 Dollars is currently valued at $9.00-$11.00 in 2017 Dollars (Aug. 2017
CoinWorld Coin Values).
Unless a Coin is a Commemorative of personal interest or Error, I gave up on collecting them. The last Mint & Proof Sets I purchased were the 2009 sets, and that was for the grandchildren.
Like the 2009 issue, the 225th Anniversary Mint Set caught my eye recently, and about an hour before they were to go on sale, logged in and entered my credit card info in advance on my account to help speed up the process at noon.
At 11:58AM, I was on the Mint Set webpage refreshing the page every 20 seconds until they went on sale.
The instant they were available, it had taken about 90 seconds to place my order for 2 sets and receive my order confirmation number.
At 12:05 I received the email reminding me to make my purchase. I'm not sure why they didn't send the reminder just before Noon since they were unavailable at 12:05.
After placing my 2 set order, I went here to check out other members experience on the Mints website, and subscribed to this thread.
Knowing that the Mint Set was sold out (at least that's what I thought) on the 1st, imagine my surprise this morning at 11:30 when I viewed this thread and found they're still available.
As I continued surfing CCF threads, this thread had captured my attention to the point that I kept thinking maybe I should see if more are available, and if so, order 2 more plus 2 regular "P&D" Mint Sets (for the 2017 'P' Cent).
I couldn't resist, and at 12:17pm (8/3) some 48 hours and 16 minutes later, I now have 4 'S' & 2 'P&D' Mint Sets headed this way.
Anyone that has followed my posts/comments on the Currency Forum knows I'm a Numbers Person addicted to converting Serial Numbers to their assigned C.O.P.E or L.E.P.E. Plate Position.
With that said, in the 48 hours 16 minutes between Order Confirmation Numbers from my first order to today's order, the U.S. Mint only processed 11,563 Orders in this time period over the Internet.
My August 1st 12:01pm Confirmed order was #0520277 in the amount of $64.85 and today's $106.75 order #05214290 Confirmed on 8/3 at 12:17pm.
Other members that had placed orders in the first 48 hours can compare their order number to what I have to confirm my 11,563 Number, and if I'm missing something, kindly advise as I would think more orders would have been processed on the Mints website.
In closing, I know my 1st Mint purchase 42 year's ago is valued less than the Issue price when comparing 1975 Dollars to today's 2017 Dollars. I'll never know what these 2017 sets will be valued at in 42 years (2059)as I would be 106 years old. Then again, I never purchased this for profit, and like most items one purchases, may have to factor in the cost of ownership & depreciation if I wanted to sell.
