Quote: If a numismatist doctor removed a Buffalo nickel in a situation like this, would he check the date and MM?
I bet the acid in the stomach would be perfect for revealing the dates of Buffalo nickels where the year had been worn off... Who wants to be the first to test this theory?
Technically stomach acid (HCL) should be strong enough (PH level 1 or 2) to act upon a copper nickel alloy. No idea how much time through as copper-nickel is a more resistant metal to HCL.
I remember a general outcry due to zinc being poisonous and the USA switching to copper plated zinc planchets from doctors in 1982, never heard much about it since, maybe the amount of zinc to ingest would be a handful of cents not just one. A scary thing for kids to swallow these days is super magnets as more than one can pinch off an entire area of intestines and do serious damage or death to someone that does swallow a couple of them. Not to be a downer, since this is supposed to be a humorous thread. Sorry.

Quote: I've seen some South African cents and half-cents of 1961-4 that had been swallowed by an ostrich and they were incredibly worn down!
An ostrich is a bird and birds don't have teeth. So they will swallow stones which are held in the gizzard where mucular action uses them to grind up their food. The coins would have wound up in the gizzard along with the stones and would have been ground against them.
@jbuck New thread for Mr Tennant. Post your... FRANKLIN nickels.
@Yokozuna, Its too bad that there was no uneaten burger found with the two hamburger wrappers and a half-eaten order of fries in a McDonald's bag behind their bathroom wall from decades ago...might have sparked a new wave of collecting Error quarter pounders. They are said to not decompose as normal. https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/30/us/o...d/index.html
