I'll be the first to post one of my many Franklin nickels in this new topic. This is, of course, the oh-so famous 1917 under 1918-D Double Franklin Nickel designed by Nicholas Nickleby the lead singer for Nickelback. The coin is one of the most popular coins ever struck and it is rumored that Benjamin Franklin himself actually posed nude for both the obverse and reverse portraits seen here, This coin is ANACSPCGSNGCEIEIO MS-67+ (Full Horn) Certified with a CAC Pinto Bean sticker certifying that it is more Mint State than the state of the mint itself. Photoshop may have been used to create this image. SO... here it is in all its glory! Click on the picture for a larger image

Did they ever make a Bugs Bunny version of this Franklin Buffalo nickel?

Earle42 asked... Quote:Did they ever make a Bugs Bunny version of this Franklin Buffalo nickel? Yes! And thank you for asking! Here's the coin you are thinking of. It's the 1916 under 1916-D Franklin nickel. It's a clashed die strike where the obverse die was clashed with a cartoon frame. One thing that makes it truly odd is that the year of the coin and the year of the cartoon are different, and you wouldn't think that a celluloid film frame would leave this type of impression on the hardened surface of a mint die but remember the old adage "stranger things" and all that. And speaking of "stranger things," the reverse die used on the very same strike seems to be clashed with a coin that didn't exist until years later! This causes some really heated debate in the numismatic community about "mint assisted" "impossible" "what's for lunch" and "time machine." It's akin to the old chicken/egg riddle. You know... which came first? Here's a totally different image from the first Franklin nickel I posted. You can tell that it's not the same image as the background is a different color. Oh, and the date too, I guess. It's a different date, too. If you have a good eye, you may even notice that the designer's initial is different on the two coins. This was caused by someone's inattention to details where the F wasn't changed to an N on the first uploaded image, and someone didn't want to suffer the wrath of the Bobby by uploading a corrected version once they saw their mistake, thus taking up more space on one of the CCF storage devices. Simply amazing and thanks for the fast response! I had heard rumors of this one's existence, but was not sure it was a reality. Now we all know better! Wonder if Daniel Carr could be persuaded...

Quote: I've seen some South African cents and half-cents of 1961-4 that had been swallowed by an ostrich and they were incredibly worn down! I had an uncle who drove a truck between a chicken processing factory in Kentucky to a rendering plant near his home in Arkansas. This was back in the late '60's and early '70's. I remember he had a box of coins, a few rings, and other dropped items that had been worn smooth after being swallowed by the chickens and ground down in their gizzards.

captainrich - Been there done that! Don't recommend it to anyone. You think early American coins are expensive?
