Imagine searching through this pile. I think most of them are Thai, but still. Display case located at the "Big Buddha", Phuket, Thailand.

They must clean that out every now and then and use the proceeds for the Big Buddha. But the big pile is quite dramatic I must say.

That would take a long time to search. A very long time.

Oriole, I didn't linger there too long but there didn't appear to be any discernible slot for inserting more coins. This led me to think that it was a more or less "permanent" display meant to encourage donating at the (many) other donation spots around the complex. But yes, you'd have to think they'd cash it in at some point. There's a boatload of money in there.

The Big Buddha is quite amazing, the site has a commanding view, and it's still under construction. Surprisingly, entry is free.

Edit: I take back my "most of them are Thai" comment. I wish I had taken clearer pictures, but zooming in I don't see any 10 baht coins, which have a distinctive yellow core like a Canadian toonie. Seems like that would be a common donation (about 1/3 of a US dollar). I think I see an Australian 50 cent, and some holed coins possibly 50 yen or Chinese. I see US dimes and cents. Perhaps they pulled out the baht and this really is a "world coin lot".

I wouldn't be surprised if it was permanent; imagine trying to lift the thing to empty it. Interesting how many different nationalities are represented.
