Not sure if I am seeing things (Probably) But through all the die resurfacing it looks like there was a side ways D below the mintmark? Or is it an S ? Or in the last picture it looks like S E reading right?

Well I decided to put under a higher resolution and I couldn't get the S E to appear. So Some Camera Tom Foolery! As for the D being over a horizontal D?

Note the lines under the mint mark match the direction of the very heavy die flow. It is were a RPM these lines would not be there, just like the mint mark doesn't have these lines on it. Mint marks are punched into the die, A RPM is also the same with it being punched into the die, but doubling it from the punch. The die flow lines are on the fields of the die, not on the devices. as mentioned the die flow and deterioration is what you see under the mint mark. Hope this helps.

Coop, those scratch lines are those from someone prepping the die or resurfacing it? You called them die flow?

These lines are the result of (VLDS) die wear. You can see that often on nickels. Especially on the later die states. They are natural, not added to the die. If they polished the die the die scratches would be present along with die abrasion that reduces the fields. The devices will also show shorter height devices that also make the devices smaller a bit in size.

Interesting. I never have seen them other than in the mintmark area. What also stands out is at it looks like these lines look like the area the mint mark is on is shallower than surrounding area.

Note the heavy die flow lines and weakened devices on the dies when they age. Just as when we get older we get wrinkles, the dies get flow lines because of the metal movement in the same direction on each strike. Just normal die wear. Polishing the fields removes this, but removes part of the fields reducing the crispness and height of the devices. Note examples below. Click to enlarge these images. This will enlarge them even more.

thanks Coop! I am amazed that was from natural wear. That also clears up why they aren't raised and causing shallows not raised areas. So if I may ask what does die resurfacing or refurbishing look like? So I can compare.

A couple of ways. One with a tool rubbed on the fields of the die.

The fields are the outside part of the die, the devices are deeper into the die.
Another way is by polishing the fields with a diamond paste:
