History and coin lore lover that I am, I'm happy to oblige ... Glad you guys like the box. I've seen this transformation done to other coins, too. The Trade dollar, our largest coin, was most ideal for the purpose, it seems. Columbian Half Dollars, not being as readily acceptable in circulation, were another choice for this repurposing.

ExoGuy - I've seen the ones that come apart (was actually a Kennedy half), but never saw one with a hinge in it... pretty cool, thanks for sharing that one.

@Paralyse ... I'd venture a guess that the colors are more vibrant when this coin's in-hand?

They are, and there's luster underneath the toning, but somewhat muted, which is why I graded it AU50. A TPG might call it 53 or even 55, the strike is decent, but it might more likely get AU details because it was lightly wiped at some point long ago and has a few hairlines in the fields. I enjoy it as is, raw, and haven't got any plans to send it in, for that reason. This is another picture taken awhile back with different lighting and the camera at a bit of an angle instead of straight-on. You can see some of the remaining luster, and golds, blues, and browns.

1876-S, sorry about the terrible photos. I had to take down my photo set up, and my iPhone skills leave a lot to be desired....

Quote: I'm a BIG fan of the color on your Trade dollar!! Thanks Moe! I must be the last person in the world who still has coins in SEGS slabs, but they called this one XF-45 and noted an "old cleaning". Maybe if I wait long enough to re-slab it by a top tier TPG, it will come back clean.
