I think it's an S-44 with the die crack through the 17. Seller guarantees authenticity.

I have taken it off of the counterfeit thread.

What is on the edge of the coin? Is it just a plain edge? That will give you your answer.

It is definitely not an S-44; it does have an S-43 obverse, but the reverse appears to be wrong for S-43: it should be rotated but that is not mentioned, the leaves and berries are off in places (notably the leaf under 2nd T in STATES), and the T in CENT does not appear to be noticeably lower than the adjacent N.

It is possible that the issues with OP's coin are attributable to corrosion and environmental damage. But my suspicion is still that this is a counterfeit. It may well be a damaged authentic coin. Of course, the best action would be to have it examined in-hand and authenticated by a TPG.

Edit: I can't see the auction at work, but see Edweather's post below.

Talking about berries being off - on the reverse between the first S from STATES and the O from ONE some coins have 4 leaves, 2 berries. OP coin has the 4 leaves but only ONE berry.
Unless they struck many different varieties I guess we'll never know.

I agree, not an S-44, but probably, S-43 as Conder mentioned. On the reverse, the T in CENT does look lower than the adjacent N. FWIW there is edge lettering.
Rest in Peace

It's over $300 with 5 days to go, so a few folks like it. But it could be the same folks who snatch up all the 1804 Bust Dollars.

There are 70 different varieties of 1794 large cents, 59 S numbered varieties and 11 NC's.

Definitely S-43. If you blow up the images some more you cand clearly see the dull break/gouge from the rim over the A in STATES, and the die crack from the rim up through the you is just starting. Appears to be die stage II.

Conder is right. It's apparently just severe environmental damage/corrosion, not signs of a fake.
