I was reading this months Canada Coin News paper, specifically the article Cherry Picking Canada by Scott Hopkins.
The article goes on about the 1991 25 cent Canadian quarter and how its a must for today's entry level collector because the value is still relatively low and it has the most potential to become a sought out item in the future.
I agree with a low mintage of 459k it has good genes, but is it just hype. Can I see this item becoming worth $100 plus dollars in ms or specimen condition, is it already there. Or are articles like the one above keeping it alive and making it worth more then it really is.
The 1991 quarter maybe hard to fine in circulation but how hard is it to fine for sale at auctions or at a dealer.

It may be hard to find in circulation, but are readily available elsewear. I took a quick look on ebay and there are about 75 listings with everything from circulated to High Cameo Specimen. There are also a couple of uncirculated rolls listed, and that is just on ebay. The only ones I can see that may hit higher value are high grade MS or PL. (As is the case with most coins). They are more valuable than other year Queens but with a circulation of 459,000, I can't see them ever being a hard to find coin.

All hype , of all the so-called circulation issues 459,000 most were hoarded in rolls and are readily available for a price today. Question to ask yourself.......will there ever be more than 459000 collectors of Canadian 25 cent Nickel coins ?

Too many for the market to absorb to gain a great deal. I'm with pacific on their points.
Imo the spirit of the article is right, buy one- it's a must and not likely you'll lose money, weather it would gain substantially is speculation at best.
I like mine, now it's very very scarce, a CIRCULATED 91 hahahah!
Got it in a laundmat for change around 2000 probabaly an F12.

The catalogue value is often far higher than what the coin is actually worth. A few years ago I bought two MS 65 certified at $65 each. I remember clearly that the catalogue value at the time was over a hundred. Now I think back, even $65 may have been too much.

Scott's article was very timely as earlier this month I saw a presentation on the 1991 25 cents. It would seem the shortage has more to do with Canada 125 quarters than the brief strike at the circle M ranch. The mainstream popularity of a 'rarity' definitely has a significant impact on the perceived value of the coin. Yet there are other coins/varieties that barely get a blip on the radar. Take the 2009 Men's Hockey raised '2' colourized quarter as an example. Only 200,000 were minted with the remaining 2.8 million being the more common variety incused '2' as a total of 3 million were inserted among rolls of 22 million coins released. You seldom ever see any colourized coin in circulation which usually command a small premium and yet you can usually find the much rarer variety being offered for around $10. http://www.mint.ca/store/news/royal....WaCP_LibH-sInterestingly enough the 2015 Charlton Catalogue lists both coins in MS64 at the same price.

This one just sold at auction for $126.26 with buyers premium. I was in the bidding until $50, but wow did this keep going. Looks like the hype is working.

I realize this convo is old, but I'd like to know if anyone can help me. I'm wondering what the value would be for a mint roll of 1991 Canadian quarters?

@luckydollarstore I'm not sure how many are in a roll. I can guess 40 pieces from online search. I would estimate the lowest mint grade possible at MS-60 (value of $5 a coin). Book value of $200. I would try and get a deal at $150 for the roll.
My thoughts.

I bought my 1991 mint quarter in 2013 for $13.19 including shipping on ebay. Maybe MS63+ as a rough guess. I have not found any in change since then.

Since 1991, I have only been able to find three in the wild. Not very good odds I must say.
