I've recently acquired a group of 17th century small copper coins, all seeming to be of the New France variety. This one was in with them and is clearly brass. It's rough. Can you give me any information on it? Thanks!
Older copper and brass coins can tone in unusual colours. I think that this could be copper or brass, but I woul dbet that it is a copper coin with unusual toning/corrosion. XRF analysis would tell you for sure.
One further comment that I didn't think of immediately: to the best of my knowledge, aside from one insanely rare variety (as in only known from 1 or 2 examples, IIRC), there was no 17th century small copper issued for New France.
As such, I suspect that the rest of your coins are either also regular French (royal or feudal), or not 17th century.
