I'm working on completing a British type set of current circulating commemorative coins 50 pence-2 pounds. A friend in England has been hunting through his change for a few years for most of them, but I'm still missing some key dates in the set:

50p Kew Gardens 2009
1 pound Edinburgh city crest 2011
2 pounds Commonwealth Games series (all 4 coins)

I've specifically hunted for the Edinburgh city crest pound coin on ebay, but I've never found one available in the US, and shipping from the UK often puts the coin above $25.

I know all of those coins are also tough to find in circulation, but does anyone have any recommendations where I could find these? I've checked with a few dealers online and at my local show, but none carry modern circulating coins.

I'd love to trade with members here if anyone has them available (Mods - let me know if this isn't allowed in this section of the forum).

The Kew gardens I've never found either and the price for them is very high. I'm looking at getting a copy to plug the gap. I refuse to pay that much.

Again, the Edinburgh pound I've not found in change - and never will - the last of the round pounds were withdrawn from circulation on the 15th October.

Have you tried the Facebook groups? UK based ones seem to be littered with these and I'm sure people would ship to the us if you asked.

I've got the Kew Gardens 50p and Edinburgh £1 coin in BU year sets that I bought from The Royal Mint at the time of issue, but I've never found either in circulation. I have found each of the Commonwealth Games £2 coins, but haven't had any of these for about three years now.

I think these are a bit of a problem to find even if you live in the UK, I reckon many are hoarded or for sale at over the odds and they are likely to cost you whatever you do.

I have a jar which I put commemoratives or interesting coins in so that I can trade with US collectors (I am missing some Presidential dollar coins and some of the ATB's) but the only ones I have of the three you mention are in my collection and I got those before people woke up to how difficult they are to find.

Good luck

with Daviduk, I doubt that any of us in the UK will see another Kew Gardens in our change & the chances of getting a Commonwealth games £2 are almost as distant.
The group you are after I have sold several times and the last one was about a year ago, collectively they sold for around $100 but their value has increased massively in the interim period.
Its one of those things where you either bite the bullet and pay up or forget about them and move on.

That's what I was afraid would be the case. tenbobbit, if you have another set for sale in the future, let me know!

Since the Edinburgh is my final 1 pound coin remaining, and knowing that the old round pounds are leaving circulation, I figured I would start hunting it down specifically. Kew Gardens is a much lower priority, but the price certainly isn't lower!

My advice if you can get an edinburgh UNC for under £50 bite their hands off. They are going to go like kew 50p's. Also I would if your a set collector start buying them. Now the £1 oldies have gone those sets will increase in value. I have a sneaky suspicion that the £2 will be next for the overhaul . It was so badly made and so easily counterfeited it must be on the cards?
