All TPG's have blown it with certain coins over the years, but that boggles the mind.

Wow.... 20 grade points... did you cut it out and resubmit it blind, or did you return the coin in the VF-30 holder and ask for another opinion?
The reason I ask, is because there are stubborn tendencies at ICCS, and to date (my own experience and a few others), ICCS has never changed a grade on a formal second opinion.

The color is a bit unusual. Could easily be that there is something about the coin in hand that indicates cleaned/retoned, that isn't apparent in the photos. The details are definitely AU, so at least they're in the ballpark this time around!

The coin does have a yellowish tint to it and does look retoned but here are no visible hairlines in hand...I have no problem with the "cleaned" designation. Although another coin from the same collection exhibits identical color and was not designated as such. The grade spread is what was of grave of concern.
I did cut it out and submit it raw...And yes, I am very aware of the "stubborn" factor...The 1891 is a good example...

I still think it's undergraded but at least it's in the ballpark now.

That is a MAJOR fail by ICCS! I used to love ICCS but over the past couple of years they have gotten extremely inconsistent. I recently resubmitted some previously graded ICCS (some blind and others not) and the results were shocking. There is a complete lack of consistency and its unacceptable. I have never liked the idea of a non-Canadian graded being the one who grades my Canadian coins but ICCS have left me with no other choice. I would be surpised if they exist in the next 5-10 years. Their technology hasnt changed ever, their flips dont actually protect the coin and would be easy to fake AND they are inconsistent. Pity.

Ok...So the saga continues...I've decided to do some conservation work on this coin and send it back to ICCS...If you followed the thread, this coin has made 3 trips to graders....ICCS VF-30 Cleaned, NGC "body bag, altered surface", ICCS AU-50 Cleaned. Here are the pictures of the conserved coin. Do you want to take a guess now?

EF-45 but I think it may still get a "cleaned" designation.

Who knows. The way ICCS is grading these days, it probably came back labelled as a Specimen.

This is a great example of why ICCS has received 0 dollars from me and never will.
I can't wait to see what the next grade will be. How long will we have to wait?
I have a real problem with TGP grades on coins that were poorly struck. The grading system fails them miserably. According to ICCS grading standards, coins produced 150 years ago did not all come out of the mint in MS states.

That's just nuts. The coin is way sharper than that.
