Just what exactly did your "conservation" entail?

I've become to realize that results from ICCS seem to often vary by batch. All the coins I posted here recently were sent in a single batch. I've had stingy batches and forgiving batches, but they tend to be consistent to each other. I am not sure if Brian is still grading to give Scott some rest periodically or someone else comes in to help, or its just the luck of the draw. But my batch theory seems somewhat consistent.

SPP....With respect to "conservation" a combination of acetone, MS70 and a q-tip is what I used. The idea is to never do anything "dry". I thought I could do more to further remove the yellowish tint from the coin but at some point you run the risk of hair-lining the coin.

I would have said EF-40 to 45, I think the latest grade is the closest ICCS has gotten to getting it right. The fact that they no longer note that it's been cleaned is interesting though, caveat emptor!

It makes me laugh when graders assign a split-split grade (like AU-58 for ICCS or AU-53 or VF-25 for PCGS) because the standard points on the Sheldon scale do not provide enough grade resolution...yet we commonly see grade swings of 10 points or more upon re-submission, as in this case.

Actually, assigning split grades or different grades when comparing ICCS to the US TPGs makes perfect sense.

Company grading philosophies differ greatly and anyone who has had a lot of experience in this area would know this.

It doesn't mean one TPG is wrong and the other one is right.

They are both right because they have graded the coin according to their own standards.

When any company is unable to reliably demonstrate those grades consistently, it's moot. A VF-25 or an AU-53 grade is, realistically, totally pointless. It creates a level of resolution that is unnecessary because even the best of the best TPG's - PCGS - cannot consistently assign those grades.

I think I misinterpreted your comment in my previous post.

I thought you were talking about how we give different grades of a coin when ICCS and PCGS grade the coin....ex "ICCS would grade it ef40 and PCGS would grade it au50'

But now I see that you were talking about how grading companies give these 'in-between' numbers, like au53 or vf25 and I can say I'm in total agreement with you.

It's silly to try to be this exact with grading.
