First off sorry for the poor photos - don't have my proper set up set up.

Had this coin aside for a while and can't find out what is with the silver showing on the edges. Almost looks like the coin is plated or has had acid dropped on it? I have not seen any other pennies that look like this.

As always thanks in advance.

Any thoughts?

the coin appears to have been plated or painted at one time..and most of it has wore off, or fell off, my best guess is it was painted then all the high spots were wiped cleaned before the paint dried.. then through time the rest is peeling or flaking off.

Try to dig some of the light stuff off because you have nothing to lose.

You can't damage it anymore.....

How about an acetone bath prior to trying mechanical removal? Of course, the toning may be a lighter shade underneath that coating. Be sure to post "after" pics so we can see what the final product looks like.

If paint, the acetone should remove it completely. If plating, it would have no effect at all. You're almost certainly right about the differing patina. Even if removed, it will be obvious long into the future which area of the coin was covered.

So . . . update and answer. Tried the acetone bath and nothing seemed to change save for the fact that anything silvery looked a bit shinier after I was done. Took a really close look under a 10x loop and parts looked like something had covered the coin and other parts looked as if the penny was a different metal and some plating had worn off. Finally decided to try scratching a bit of the silver off and yes, it came off with the normal bronze color underneath. So just a plain penny not in great shape that must have had a super thin layer of solder or something on the outside edge.
