Been really slow around here today so I thought I would ask to see what coin collecting goals you all have for 2018.

For me I intend to continue building on my Parthian collection just this year I've added more than 40 coins from that series thanks to Bob.

I also want to work on building my Baktrian, Indo-Scythian, Indo-Parthian, Seleucid, and Ptolemaic collections.

I also am going to work on part two of my reference book.

I'm hoping to expand my collection of coins from Elymais.

Here's hoping that 2018 is a good year for all of us!

1. Stop being lazy and finish/upload the threads I've been tooling around on for 6+ months

2. Organize and downsize; maybe turn the addiction into a business or at least a zero-sum game

3. Save up and buy just a few coins high on my want list:
- Nice Augustus denarius to replace my ratty provincial bronze
- Julius Caesar portrait denarius so my Roman collection doesn't start with a hole
- Nice example of either Otho or Pertinax
- Nice, big, high grade Greek tetradrachm... leaning heavily toward Lysimachus just as an objet d'art for my collection

Good idea for a thread Ron!

1. Knock at least one more date off of my "one from every year" list. I'm down to some pretty hard ones and these medieval coins just don't come to auction very often, especially in my price range.
2. Continue dabbling in Ancient Greece

Goals ?
Goals ?
"Collectors" have goals ?

My penultimate goal (as ever) is to avoid bankrupting myself by purchasing things I can't really afford !
This I hope to continue by adhering to my tried and true stratagy of being an Olympic level cheapskate and always being willing to lose an auction !
It seems like every year brings a new surge of some type.
A few years back I was finding VF+ Antoninus Pius bronzes for as low as $50 !
The next year I stumbled upon EF/XF Tetrarchy folles (my Londons) going for under $50 !
This past year I have accumulated more than a few Severan bronzes for very nice prices. In fact I picked up more this past year than I did in the other 40 years collecting.
So we shall see which directions the winds blow this year. Like any good raider I will seek my fortune where the gods of numismatics send me !

PS
My ultimate goal is use my fleeting "treasures" to finance my 2 childrens future education. Be that a year abroad (Spain ?) for my eldest (18) or music school for my youngest (13)
Then I know it will have all been well worthwhile.

The one thing I really need to focus on in 2018 is thinning the herd a little, I have fallen out of love with certain areas and shifted my focus elsewhere which means I now have a large eclectic collection which gets little or no attention.
I do suffer from " hoarders pox " which makes the above difficult though

I ofcourse will still be adding my Emperor of choice but wont be buying any +1 or job lots just to get 1 or 2 coins.

For ancients I'll focus on silver masa coins from 8th-15th century Indonesian kingdoms.

As far as I know, the only variety guide about those coins is just a part of a 19th century book. That's the only relevant material I found in a 1992 book about Javanese economy of the era.

So my goal is to try to get many of those coins and try to make a booklet about the varieties.

My goals don't really pertain to ancient coins at the moment though an expansion of my Roman coins would be the most logical next step as they are under-represented within my ancient collection.

My collection goals where coins are concerned are to re-aquire a portrait collection of sovereigns which is really the only thing I have ever sold and regretted. These come to money now with gold price being what it is but are like money in the bank as instantly redeemable and tax-free.

I still frequent this coin section and my love is still Greek silver but I am trying to complete several different competing fields at present that have me not adding so much in this area. Paper money, antique English silver objects and highend timepieces don't leave much budget left over at the moment.

I have been collecting ancient coins since 1969 , then passing in the middle seventies to antiquities , and since 10 years ago, coming back to coins .My first goal now , having 70 years since august , is to explain my daughter what you can learn collecting coins .I think it is the same problem for every collector , what will happens to my collection ? For my antiquities, I don't think there is a problem , because it is nice to see in the house , but coins ? it is in a box and nobody see it .
So , my first goal is to explain the coins , to make she appreciate it and understand it . Maybe it looks very pessimist , but I think it is a problem if you want your collection is not sold .
Then , for myself : I agree with Furius Rufus , By collecting coins , you have only one problem : TO PAY , you think this year I will collect this kind of coins , then I see a good deal and...
I buy ... I hope to collect this year some beautiful coins of Sicily , then of Greece and then of Rome , but the problem is when I see a Beautiful LRB for little money ,I buy it ,that's my problem .
In any case , I 'll post here how I explain my collection at my daughter . albert

Great thread!

I will continue to be on the lookout for upgrades to my 12 Caesars in silver collection. Most are vf or better, but a few need to be upgraded. I am being very selective about which coins gets added to this set. If I add 1 or maybe 2 in 2018 I will be happy.

My other main area of collecting concerns historical figures on coins. There are 2 sub collections. The first is a collection built on historical figures as dramatized by Shakespeare in his plays. I need to add a number to this collection. I would like to add 2 difficult ones this year, a 40 drachmai piece of Cleopatra VII, and a decent coin of Richard III. If I achieve this then I would target a coin of Henry IV.

The second part of my historical figures collection concerns historical gold coins of the world. Yes, there are a number of ancients and medieval coins in this collection, but I a also allowing modern coins into the gold set.

I doubt I will ever run out of historical figures to collect and my 12 Caesars will always be the centrepiece of my collection.

Excellent comments everyone. As FR said staying out of the poor house is not only a goal for 2018 but has been a goal for years in the past and many more to come in the future.

It sounds like Albert and I have this in common. My daughter is fascinated by my coins and while I do intend to use many of them for her benefit some "keepers" will end up in her pocket !
My son is young but shows little inclination to appreciate them as much. My fear is he would dump them on ebay in order to buy another guitar !
Or god forbid ......... video games !!
I have repeatedly tried to sit the wife down and explain what that great treasures lay inside my great mahogany box. But she has little patience and is more concerned with "what's it worth ?"
My answer of "whatever any fool will pay for it" disturbs her !

So my little girl is my only hope ! I will in the end stash the best of the bunch in a lock box for her to keep. The rest ?
Well as mentioned I intend that they benefit my 2 kiddos in ways they will understand many many years from now.
