A DP 9 # 2 ..an acquisition from last year..The obv has a few depressions in the bust.. either very old dings or planchet abnormalities.. The last pic shows the RP 9 very well.

"I will never understand how this dramatic RP 9 never made it into the 2011 Charlton varieties section."
because it's not dramatic. you can barely see it under 20x. I believe one of the criteria was "easily visible under 10x"

What a great thread!! Lots of nice repunched 9's. That J3a is a beauty DEVLEC! One of my favorites also. (I think I say that about every 1859 I see.)

I will never understand how the example on p.289 got into the varieties section ( I really can't see anything..) and this "most dramatic 9" didn't make the cut..(so to speak) Possibly , they didn't have a good enough example to show off the double slash or cuts in that 9....and it's probably a tough one to find in a higher grade..and that's where you start seeing the beauty of the RP in the 9..

The examples of the p289 in-hand look very different with good offset and easy to see with the naked eye. The physical coins that we used and their initial photos from us look nothing like the crappy photography that ended up from Charlton printing the book. We were limited to 80 pages and we tried to show the different 'types" of varieties that you might find in any given date. We had to have examples from every date. We already had underpunches below the loop, above the loop, inside the upper oval and either side of the upper oval, plus those on the knob for 1859 .. how many more pages did you want us to use for that date?.

This is Haxby reverse J23 and is paired with 2 obverses (65 and 65a) This one is 65a1 (65a + J23) For some time I had thought that the coin on page 289 was reverse J23, but as I was posting these photos I took another look at the picture on page 289 and noticed the die cracks didn't match J23. I see now that they match P13, so the coin on page 289 matches Haxby die pairs 751 and 75a1. I feel kind of dumb now not to have noticed those die cracks before. Every day is a new adventure with 1859's.

I have to admit I made the same mistake so that means I'm still looking for the 59 on 289 back to needing 3 of the 59's listed

As you guys know, I don't use Haxby #'s, nor do I know how to even look one up. I have 3 of the p289 59's with 3 different obverses .. one of the Obv's has doubling all the way around, but the G in Gratia is grossly at least triple punched.
Whoops, I see that the Obv G that I thought was triple punched just looks that way from the grotesque D/C running through it. If I read Haxby right, MY "stage 5" is much worse (D/C-wise)than the stage 5 pictured on the site.
