Wondering what this is and have had no luck coming up with an answer. Measures about 4.5 inches in diameter. Seems to be like a paperweight or a desk ornament as it has felt on the bottom. I am assuming that the item is not really containing 1 oz. of gold - perhaps gold plated at most? Comes in an RCM cardboard box - no info on the inside. Any ideas on what it is and value would be most appreciated.

First time I have ever seen anything like that...

I don't have it in hand. Backside is essentially just felt.

I found this one that sold on ebay. 232535298605It doesn't have the box. Maybe commissioned by the RCM for some award/gift purpose for employees?

Great find Spruett001! Thanks! The auction that it's in right now has a number of other items that I don't really need or want and seeing the price it's getting on ebay gives me some sense of its' value. I'll likely not put any bids in as the price is already much higher than what your post indicates. It's a nice item but I's rather put my $$$ to actual real coins.

Probably a marketing sample tool for the RCM bullion dealers

I'm glad I could help. I found nothing else about it. Quote: It's a nice item but I's rather put my $$$ to actual real coins. I would much rather buy a real silver Maple Leaf with that money.

Agree about the SML - although the only thing the gold paper weight has going for it is that it's not likely to develop milk spots.

Come to think about this unit, the box itself is worth more, maybe

Woah!! Auction on this item just closed tonight. I stopped watching at $110. It sold for $750.00! Plus 15% hammer and 13% tax. Maybe it did have 1 oz. gold.

Quote: Maybe it did have 1 oz. gold. Or maybe some people just thought that. I'm sure it's gold-plated at best.

The only interesting fact about this sale is why would anyone pay 1000 bucks for a pretty blue box, it is clearly a one sided plated advertisement sales piece, since HST was added clearly not bullion so the box must be the value !
