Lovely Italian dime, Hondo...not to put you on the spot, but do you have a description of the (presumably allegorical) action shown on the reverse? I'm making things up here...like writing captions for random old photos or sitcom scenes...great fun!

Thank you, daltonista! I picked up that coin at a show this weekend, and wasn't familiar with it beforehand. I was on the way out and had a few dollars left so looked through a dealer's box of internationals. That year Italy also minted a 2 Lire (silver) with the same design, and a 5 Lire (silver) and 50 Lire (gold) that are very similar. Their other coins from that brief period also have very attractive designs. From Numista: Quote: Reverse In the field there are two standing figures: the female represents Italy and the male Rome. Italy has her left hand on a plow adorned with ears and fruits. Behind the figures there is a giant merchant ship.

Got it, Hondo...many thanks! Maybe they're discussing whether Roma should step down from that pedestal and board the Ship of State together with his newfound main squeeze Italia, but they can't figure out what to do about the @#$% plow? Honestly, it would be easier to make up a scenario for this if they were facing one another!

And why do they have a plow (and fruit) on the dock, unless they were just unloaded from the ship?
