I love art deco. It is my favourite art movement. I have a big collection of art deco related items from the 1920s to the 1950s, however, I have no art deco coins. I am aware of art deco tokens and souvenir coins, but I am not aware of any general circulation art deco coin designs. Can you share some art deco coin designs with me, please? Whether they are in fact general circulation coins or not is not that important, I would like to see any art deco coins, and possibly see some I might want to add to my collection.

A very brief description of Art Deco for those who might not know: Art Deco was the dominant art, architectural and design style of a large portion of the early half of the 20th century. It is considered to have spawned just after WW1 due to the desire to have a more powerful and modern style than the predecessor Art Nouveau (which was far more romantic and used natural elements like flowers) Art Deco gets its name from the 1925 Exhibition of Industrial, Modern and Decorative Arts in Paris, although the style itself predates this. Art Deco makes use of symmetry and geometry and often simple designs with complex precision. Common elements of art deco include sunbursts, repeating geometric patterns, pinstriped frames, themes of power and progress, and very large scale (as art deco came about at the same time as the first modern skyscrapers, New York, for instance, is considered an art deco city)

@ellie, first welcome to CCF. Second, if you use the keywords ART DECO in the CCF search box, you will see several prior threads which mention one or more design elements that are art deco. One such example is the 2024 Olympic Handover medallion:

I hope my thread doesn't get ignored, this is kind of the sole reason I created my account here.

I love art deco as well, I believe the Peace dollar is a strong contender. Now you've got me curious, I'll have to flip through my albums later...

The symmetrical design with sharp angles on the 10 Reichspfennig is somewhat art deco IMO, as well as the 9 & 2 of the date:

(Old pic, ignore the 2 Reichspfennigs )

1923 Japan 50 Sen is another contender, symmetrical design with great sunburst:

The 10 sen of the same year as well, to a degree:

That is fair pushback as the folks in that specific thread concluded it that one of the fonts was actually more similar to art nouveau rather than art deco. The search methodology is sound though. You should try it.

I think you will find many European coins with Art Deco design from the 1930s-1950s. France and her colonies immediately come to mind (I think all the Vichy issues would qualify), but as you've seen, also Germany, and I think the U.S. commemorative series has a number of examples (Keith67's post).

It's a great theme to pursue in a collection, because I think many of the European types were common coins produced in high quantity, and hence readily available in attractive condition.

I am a fan of Art Nouveau, but have never looked at it as a collecting theme.

Some possibilities:

Here are a few from the Netherlands (not entirely sure if they qualify, because of the dates on the coins - and 'Art Deco flourished during the 1920s and 1930s. ) but they DO have geometry art designs to them.
