Obverse is from a rusty die as their are a lot of pimples (hopefully a rusty die). Although I see no hint of circulation rub anywhere, the fields are "dead" and the obverse gives the impression of applied tone. If it were me, I'd pass on this one unless it was already in NGC or PCGS TPG. |

This one just looks really off. I have my doubts that it is authentic. I'd take it to a LCS or somewhere to have them take a look.

Numismatic Student, What stands out that makes you think it has been cleaned? I agree that the toning looks off but not sure about the cleaning?
Moxking, Yes this variety is recognized to have been from a rusty die.
chesterb, This coin matches the WB-101 variety, and more specifically to Bill Bugert's newer book with a variety as WB-1. The die cracks and date placement are an exact match. What makes you think it is not authentic?

I have that reference and agree on the variety. It just really has an odd appearance. It has some lumps and bumps not referenced in the book like on both of the arms, obverse fields, etc. I guess it's die rust but the strike is so well executed from rusty dies? Like I said it just looks strange. High grade coin otherwise.

Chesterb, yes I agree with what you are saying. I noticed that there are more lumps and bumps than what it shows in the book. I also wonder what that is on the reverse to the left of the mm, it looks like liquid drops or bubbles?

I see these spots on toned coins all the time. Some type of liquid matter was inadvertently splashed onto the coin and caused the area to tone differently. There is another one to the left of the 'I' in the toned area on the reverse. |

surfaces look lusterless and hazy especially in the reverse. does not show natural toning, but rather what I would expect from a coin that was dipped and retoning.
