The reverses on each are high-contrast -- I can hardly tell the difference between them. Only the obverse of the one is dull.

Quote: I have no need for a duplicate, so I'm going to return the muted one because it's less appealing and because of the scratch In the first set of pics the second coin is the variety/error coin. I would NOT return it in case these eventually get attributed by a TPGThe reverse of the variety coins is not affected

...and gone again. I wonder if these will hold up? I didn't buy any. As a stand-alone product I think these may hold their value, but I also doubt these will sell in excess of $100 anytime soon. Just my Two Cents, of course.

Quote:Due to some bad bidding on my part, I accidentally ended up with two of the reverse proof Kennedy halves. Both are PCGS graded PR69, but there's a big difference in contrast between the frosted and reflective surfaces... That is very interesting and the photos are helpful. I have a feeling these 2018 RP problems will be remembered for a while.

If Bret is right that it's related to die state, it seems like there would be a spectrum of contrast as the die eventually wore down and a similar effect would have appeared on other coins -- either in this series or in previous RP releases. Alternatively, if the die was bad from the start (e.g. the field and/or the devices were not polished correctly), that would be a true variety. I have 30 days to return it. Keeping it wouldn't break me and it is interesting to have them together for a side-by-side comparison. It's a shame about the scratch on the ear though (I don't have a good picture of that yet).

Quote: I would NOT return it in case these eventually get attributed by a TPG I agree. If it were me I'd keep it. I think even if TPG don't end up recognizing them as errors they'll still appeal to collectors down the road.

Quote: Do we know what caused this variety? If Bret is right that it's related to die state I was thinking that this phenomena of lesser reverse contrasting proofs is very much the same as what happens with normal proofs. Especially the old Franklins for example. If there were grading terms for these, perhaps they would be Ultra Reverse Cameo ProofReverse Cameo Proof and simply Reverse Proof? I would think the most heavily frosted fields and blackest devices and legends would be the earliest strikes.

A few theories out there....
1) sets are all from orders with CC issues
2) they are returned sets even though the Mint says they don't resell rejects.
3) they are cc issues AND returned sets
I have three orders that I placed after they were "Currently unavailable" (4, 4 and 2). I guess I will find out and a report will be forthcoming ..;)
I should add that this is common practice for "currently unavailable" items...they are usually available for the next few days in VERY limited and decreasing amounts

So during the 8% ebay bucks day I bought 4 NGC 70 sets (saved $110)...two from kollectorz_inc and two from Pinehurst Coin...both halves from kollectorz_inc were normal Rp's but BOTH from Pinehurst were the variety/error halves....in 70 grade...nice...

So NGC graded them as 70's (perfect), but didn't provide them a special designation?
How do the two NGC 70's compare to the one you received from the mint? Do they look the same?
