Well at least the "variety" now is official. Announcing on September 4th that NGC "discovered it" a bit lame. They have probably graded thousands of these that were submitted blind and attributed none of them.

It was discovered by Joe Normal coin collector weeks ago and it took NGC this long to agree. Since no one paid the variety fee ('cuz it wasn't known at the time) they were given normal labels (I have one in 70 grade).

NGC: "Pay us to reholder and attribute the coin that has already been graded and paid for"...REALLY?

I have 10 sets coming today from the Mint that were ordered after they went dark. Let's see if the theory that they were returned because the half wasn't an RP plays out

It's interesting that if you look at the two pairs on the NGC linked page, the first variety looks like a non-cameo proof while the second looks just like a poor quality or late stage cameo proof. Based on what I've seen, I think there may be more than one variety.

Zip on the variety out of ten BUT two perfect looking BI quarters that are in the PCGS $1200 range.

The current PCGS pop report shows 107 RP Block Island quarters graded as 70s
San-Francisco-Mint-2018-Silver-Reverse-Proof-Set
PCGS is getting even tougher on the Block Island grading. On 8/22 8.12% were graded as 70s, on 8/27 it was 7.45%, now it's down to 5.45%. For comparison, Apostle Island has 281 (12.87%) graded as 70, Cumberland Island has 435 (19.98%), Pictured Rocks has 471 (21.61%) and Voyageurs has 300 (13.81%).

NGC seems to have way more graded as 70, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the NGC pop report for the reverse proof coins Maybe someone else can?

It just seems like there is a distinct difference of opinion between PCGS and NGC on what exactly constitutes a 70 grade for the Block Island RP quarter.

Thanks for info Foxwoods Man

WOW that is quite a difference

NGC has graded 3,477 BI RP quarters as 70 (72.69%)!

Definitely a difference in opinion between NGC and PCGS about what constitutes a 70 for this coin.

It would be interesting to see if PCGS would cross any of NGCs 70s, but I don't expect anyone will try it

I'm sure it will be and has been tried given the massive price difference. There are some NGC ones that would cross, but there's been the reputation for a long time that PCGS is harder with 70s and prices have reflected that in many series for quite some time

That one doesn't look near as distinct as the one Foxwoods received.

Yup...even from France I agree. The pic was just intended to show the slab. The coin in the pic was not imaged properly

FYI: there are a lot of regular slabbed halves on ebay that are using an unattributed Light Finish pic to stimulate sales BUT the catch is "certification numbers will vary" in the description....soooo beware..you WON'T get the pictured Light Finish coin
