I can just about hear LuvmyCAM screaming from here...

A lovely 1983-D FS-101 doubled ear with both obverse and reverse matching die markers. Couple dots of corrosion but this one gets added to the list for sending to a TPG. I can't use my photo studio at night so pics aren't the greatest but they show the coin well enough.

Some days are just better than others, as this quite surpasses the 1972 FS-107 I found last night.

Excellent find and good example of what it looks like. Always nice to see it "real" instead of on a page in a book

Have you noticed the doubling in any photos appear as rounded but in hand its very knifelike and symmetrically sharp. I liken it to the tip of a broadsword. One rare freaky variety you got there pal. What next ? a 1970-S F'S-101, your killen me man. Gotta go throw some books against the wall and break some dishes...gaaahhhd an 83D doubled ear ahhhh.

Cammy you've got it all wrong! One cent, bah! I paid full retail $4.50 for that roll of 83-D coins so it cost me 9 cents + 1 B/U coin I had to pull out of a partial roll to bring that one back up to 50 coins. So I've got 10 times as much invested in this coin as you suggest ;)

And one thing you are correct about is that depending on the light angle you can see that the doubling below the ear is less rounded and is in fact sharper than in the photos (yes like a spear point). I am guessing that most of the photos are taken at the same lighting angle as each person would likely arrive at the same angle as being "best" for showing the doubling. Not that there are many photos of these anyway.

So am I correct that so far this is still only the second most rare doubled ear? I only know of one 1988 and that's the discovery coin. Anyone ever see one of those or hear of a second one found?

No but if I find one I will post 25 pics. of it. The 88 doubled ear, the 66 DDR, the 82 zinc DDR, and the 70-S 101 are all legendary in our neck of the woods. I still can't believe you nailed the 83-D! John Wexler would love to photo and study an example, I volunteered mine 3 months ago and I weaseled out. I will send my example in since its slabbed, but honestly bats you should email him as yours is raw and higher quality. I know for a fact he is eager to photo and detail information on this coin. However...I have had mine 6 months so I'm used to it, I can part with it for 5 weeks. You, you better study yours for a month! Shoot me a email and tell me your take. I have left this man hanging, the grandpooba of LMC varietys. I better shape up and let him borrow the coin. Anyways again, congratulations. My finds today: 1959 -D RPM W002 (boring) and an unattributed 1989-D DDR. States is doubled north and e pluribus has extra thickening. Too minor for a good photo with my gear but be on the alert for the 88's theirs several minor DR's.

I didn't know Mr. Wexler was looking for one of these. I'll email him tomorrow and see if he wants to look at mine. I've already got another package here for him waiting to go out as soon as I get back the last batch I sent in. Got three more new DDO's out of the five I sent in this time (no more 1966's though). He might be interested in my MS 1946-S IMM as well as it has very good markers. I'll see what he says.
