Here is my last find that is somewhat odd. Could this just be a worn out die where the reverse die was changed out or could there have been a problem with the hardness of the die steel for the obverse die? I have seen orange peel before on a coin but nothing like this. Just about the whole obverse is covered even in the center of the coin. I had to go with microscope photos to get enough quality to show the surface. Still Lookin

The die looks pretty worn. I don't know if it's from normal die wear or what, but it's very unusual. It doesn't look like PMD etheir.

I was wondering if heat was used. Like a cigarette lighter? The bottom of the reverse may have been where it was heated?

There is actually no discoloration on the reverse of the coin. The whole coin is actually a brighter color than shown in the photos. The reverse looks like it was struck with a fairly early die state die. Tomorrow I may get out a torch and see what happens on a near uncirculated zinc cent.

Take images before and after. Try one with a torch and one with a lighter is you have that option. That way we can have a side by side. Thanks. The area I'm referring to is above the ONE CENT area. That looks dark from the image.

I think that area is just further from the light.

I did heat a few uncirculated 2017 cents from the same die pair to different levels and intensity of heat. The results were a lot the same. The first thing that happened was that bubbles formed under the plating on both the obverse and reverse of the coin. Additional heat cause a distortion of the design elements of the coin. I could not get a different texture on the obverse and reverse of the coin. I therefore conclude that the above coin was not heated because of the lack of plating bubbles and lack of uniform texture on the obverse and reverse. Photos below. The first coin was heated under relatively low heat and the second under a hotter flame.
