Thanks for all the info on the boxes.

Both of these sets belonged to my friend's Dad who ordered many things directly from the US and Canadian mint (as well as the Franklin Mint [oh well]).

If the coat of arms embossed on the top of the black case matches the coat of arms on the cardboard box on the right you have something very interesting.

Here is an update pic of the two sets showing the COA on the top of both is the same. The set on the right has the original paper sowing how to open the case included.

The "Canadian Coat of arms " on the box on the left was used up
until 1957 . The right is after wards. Why it is on the 1967
Confederation set ....

Not true, the coat of arms on the right box is the 1957 revision of the very similar 1923 version and remained in use until the last revision about twenty years ago.
The one on the left is an escutcheon derived from the 1957 arms.

Earle42, the cardboard box on the left is from a 1967 red case PL set.

Thanks DBM. I am not sure how this happened as the friend of mine who owns them ordered them from the Canadian mint in 1967. These were his only two sets. Maybe at sometime he swapped boxes with another collector, or maybe the RCM made a mistake.

I don't think there was any consistent rhyme or reason how these sets were put together and what boxes there were in. Here is a red set in the original box (from a single source and I have no reason to believe the box was switched).

Thanks for that post. I think this likely solves the mystery.

I need to sell both sets for my friend. Am thinking here first then ebay.
