Is this coin an 8/high 7?
It's showing a small nodule on their neath the 2nd 8. Which is exactly how it shows in and 8 over high 7 in the Red Book pictures.
I'm just looking for clarification as to what variety. Any help would be appreciated..

Please preview your post/pictures to be sure they are rotated correctly.
The CCF Free Image Optimizer can help with that.

All I can tell for sure is that it is harshly cleaned.

I see what looks like the bottom of the 7 just under and below the second 8 (dash under 8). The VAM link provided by dave700x seem to match the coin you have. However, the image in the RedBook appears to have something left over from the 7 that is beneath the second 8 (in the upper loop of the second 8). I don't see that in your coin or the coin shown in the VAM link.

Rest in Peace

My apologies for the brevity of my reply above. I believe the OP coin to be a VAM-3 which is not the over-date obverse die in the photo posted. It is a so called dash 8 which can be found throughout the series up to at least 1885. Here is a link to a VAMworld discussion on the origin of the dash 8. http://www.vamworld.com/share/view/...yId=19492419
