It's a 2017-D uncirculated bank box. Slowly went through only 1 roll and man are my eyes sore this morning. How do you guys do it? Found one minor MD and one VLDS. Nothing exciting. I need something more than just my iPhone now for pictures. Some good, economical opinions would be appreciated. Could I get away with an inexpensive USB microscope? Can you zoom out and take full coin pictures with one of those? Thanks in advance and happy hunting.

Chafe

Yes and yes. This question gets answered pretty frequently over in the coin photography sub-section of CCF. I personally use a Celestron, but there are many other options too.

The biggest problems with the USB scopes are the plastic lens on them. You can always tell on them because of the lack of clarity of the image and the pink color on copper coins. Best to get one that works right the first time. Buying a scope with too much power is not the right scope. 2-3 different powers are not the right scope why? Because you need to see sometimes something in between these settings. So a scope with an infinite zoom is better. That way determine how much you want to see. The better choice for power is the 3.5-35x zoom scope. I've had mine for years. Any problems I've had through the years with it I figured out how to fix. A while back I was in a thrift store and there was a new one. It had a missing glass table round lens ( probably the reason for sending it to a thrift store) and I bought it. It was 10% of what my other scope was. Still haven't set it up yet. Someday........

No and no..

Cheap is what Coop is talking about.. $20 or so.. Plastic lens.. Can't elevate high enough without modification to encompass a cent completely.. Poor color.. Unsteady.. Tough to get sharply in focus.. I know for a fact.. Took a chance.. Lost.. Neat toy for the 8 & under crowd..

I consider a Celestron like what Spence is talking about a real piece of equipment.. They start at $70 or so.. I think that's without a platform.. Around a buck-thirty gets you both, but you'll still need exterior lighting.. EDIT: One can now get very decent LED lights for like $6 ea.

Have fun and good searching to you..!

Here you go chafemasterj. Here's a USB scope that I bought for 34.95 on ebay. It works great and gets the job done easily. Not only do I use it, but Mark also has the same one as me. Here's the ebay link to the USB scope. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Plugable-U...262361512520

I went through 4 different USB scopes before I found one that worked for me which is the Celestron 5mp digital. It runs around $100. The one thing that I'm sure most of us who use a scope, is getting the lighting right! It takes a lot of practice.here are a few pics done with my scope. And yes, it will take full pics of large dollars.

You're very welcome! It will take some practice to get the angles and lightning right at first, but you'll figure all of this out when the time goes by. You just ordered a very good USB scope.
