As mentioned upthread, the years 1546-48 were noteworthy from both a political and a numismatic viewpoint in Poland-Lithuania. The elderly Sigismund I of Poland (he was 79 in 1546) had begun the transition of power to his son, Sigismund II August much earlier, in 1529, installing him as de facto Grand Duke of Lithuania. But as we see on the coins of 1546-48, BOTH father and son are using the title King of Poland from 1546-48 on coins. So, on @giljan's nice Lithuanian half groat, the reverse says "SIGIS AVG REX PO MAG DVX LI" (Sigismund Augustus, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania), and my groat of his father from the same year says "SIGISMVND PRIM REX POLONIE" (Sigismund I King of Poland), The last portrait coin of Sigismund I was issued in 1540. He is never seen with a beard on his coins, though there are many paintings of him with a beard.

Very interesting @tdz! For today, I have a Prussian Groschen similar to the one I posted yesterday:

Quote: That 1544 taler from Halberstadt, Germany is a well executed coin! Indeed! Everything I would want in a beautiful medieval coin: a patron saint obverse, and a coat of arms with a great heraldric menagerie: eagle, griffon and lion (we are only lacking a bear!) 1c5d knows that I, too, am a great admirer of this coin That lovely mint state Hungarian denar of pepactonius has many of the same elements in a tinier package. And, as we move back in the 1540s, I hope @t360 is still watching, and will share a nice Lorraine coin (or more?)
