I have seen an article with similar coins that talk about 17th century Chinese commerce, but I can't find much in my searches. I am new to this...

May have once been used as a button, probably on a thick sheepskin coat.
I could well imagine a Mongolian herdsmen wearing such a coat.

A cheap way to make buttons, I guess.

Look under Korea. The information to identify a particular issuer is in the worn figures in the second picture.

This is not a coin from China. It's a Korean Sang Pyung Tong Bo cash coin issued by Hojo (Ministry of Taxation) which can be told from the reverse.
