Hello All. I found this nickel in a roll today and it has some damage to it. It looks to me like the planchet was damaged before it was struck. Has anyone else ever seen this and can tell me what happened to it?

Thank you

On CCF, any Jefferson nickel is considered a modern coin, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

Please review the forum section descriptions, so posts are made in the correct section.

What you have is a "de-lamination". The coin alloy was improperly mixed and when struck a portion of metal fell off after the strike. You can tell because the back of the head is formed. on the reverse is also a matching area of delamination as well. This was very common in the composition of the War Nickel alloy, happened on all mints, all years.

Nice find in a roll, has 35% silver in it but no nickel in the alloy.
