The color seems to be more of a gold tone instead of a dark grey. In one of the photo you can clearly see the comparison.

Which of course it (partly) is. I think it was cleaned with some substance that lightly discolored the surface under the gray oxidation, which remains in the protected areas.

There could be a lot going on, being of 50+ years old it could have seen lots of action. Coins tone very differently, it could have been buried, or under water or stuck in cola.

all of these things could change the tone of the coin. This could have been plated gold or copper at one time.

These are the more likely reasons to the difference, however there is a chance your coin is off-metal.

Can you please weigh the coin and let us know, also is this magnetic or not?

Lastly to truly know what he coin is made of you will need to find someone with an XRF machine to really know if this is off metal.

God Luck.

On CCF, all Jefferson nickels are classified as modern coins, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

You can't tell anything by weighing the coin since the nominal weight for both standard and war-composition nickels is I believe 5.0 grams. If you take it to a coin or pawn shop with XRF equipment you can verify the composition.
Unlikely to be a wrong planchet error and as noted the color is a poor indicator.

The collar on Jefferson's coat looks to have what might be a typical lamination which is far more common on War Nickels.
I'd say it's a normal War Nickel planchet.

Or is it possible that someone at the US Mint purposely made some Nickels out of Gold?
