Hello!
I'm thinking of sending this guy in!
(and maybe almost kinda somewhat feeling like it really needs a dip first)
What do you think it grades? Should it be sent in?
Thanks in advance!

I can't see any wear, although the toning might disguise that and any small bag marks. I suspect that you would need it in hand or a really good picture to be absolutely sure. So I would say at least in the MS63 range. I would not dip it.

Slabbing is not a requirement.

My question is, why? Do you plan to sell it, and you need the slab to convince someone it is a higher grade? If not, there are cheaper ways to protect it, and you get no immediate benefit from the slabbing.

My old Krause lists it as $90 in UNC (no higher grade), which suggests that the gain from slabbing may be less than the cost of slabbing. Also, you should consider whether the list prices can even be realized in your local market-perhaps it would have to be sold in Europe.

You may consider looking at recent sold prices on Heritage auctions or ebay to see if the market is stronger than my old Krause.

If you are planning on keeping this coin then I would leave it, maybe get an Air-Tite holder. I've always liked the idea of being able to handle my coins & medals, IMO. Also, I would never dip any of my coins.

Thanks! If you think an Air-Tide would work, that would be a good compromise for me.
however, would professional grading not probably add value to such a coin in the event of resell?

It might not add more value that it would cost. But, even if it does, and if you have no immediate plans to sell it, why spend the money now? That is money spent without anything to show for it.

I agree with the others regarding sending to a TPG.

AAAAAAND,
It's in an NGC MS 66 slab!
Definitely worth the grading fees!

Incredible! congrats! Some folk on here are dead against grading and I'm the opposite. Buying coins for me is how I invest, and they will be passed on to my children who will hopefully keep them and pass them on also. Slabbing a coin if I feel the value is over $100 absolutely justifies it in the long run.

62 or 3 but 42's are plentiful all over the place and in very high grades. Unless you think it would come back a 65 or 6 don't bother.

Totally agree with you TobyJ on slabbing, and the anti-slabbing folks are certainly out there. Now days slabbed coins offer a little insurance for people putting their hard earned cash down despite the naysayers. IMHO
