Quote: If used for advertising, our Mint could actually charge companies to make coins. I've suggested that as a way to be able make cents without losing money, sell advertising on the back.. For $1 million have your ad on 100 million cents

Quote: If used for advertising, our Mint could actually charge companies to make coins. I absolutely hate this idea. While it would be a way to generate revenue to help cover governmental costs, there are so many ways it can go wrong. How many ads on public transit have had to be pulled, and how many "free speech" issues have been raised over what can and cannot be posted? How much money would be lost in legal costs over all of these issues? Once on a coin and in circulation, offending pieces can't be easily recalled (and a lot of them would be hoarded as suddenly collectible). On one side, symbols of freedom and liberty, while on the other side we have messaging promoting products and services from companies that are often claimed to have business practices and political donations which violate those same principles? I don't think so. So many of us want real people off coins, and a return to allegorical representations of Liberty. "Real people" is mired in politics. Corporate advertising is worse.

Where is Teddy Roosevelt when you need him?
I think the current penny, nickle, dime and quarter have gotten stale and stodgy looking....putting dead Presidents lacks imagination....contests were held back in the day and I believe that where the Walking Liberty design came from.
Besides we are getting to the point where kids dont know who the heck they are looking at on a coin

Quote: Where is Teddy Roosevelt when you need him? Well from the looks of things, I wouldn't plan on a renaissance any time soon, but I'd love to be wrong. I think it would take an open competition among artists that have actually created three dimensional artistic sculpture as part of their past work. That's what it took the last time. And those designs weren't all that practical without a lot of trail and error at the Mint.

Quote: Besides we are getting to the point where kids dont know who the heck they are looking at on a coin But that is the reason they SHOULD remain. It is indeed OUR history which many in this current age seem to want to ignore or outright change to suit their agendas. Kids today are indeed dumbed down to the point of becoming totally incompetent without their electronics. My grandsons know nothing of true American history, and without those past lessons we are doomed to repeat the many failures. My offspring do not know what Cursive writing is, nor do they know parts of speech or how to diagram sentences...they cannot write a coherent sentence of substance if their life depended on it, the electronics does most their work for them and it is considerably lacking in that regard. Yes, sadly we are headed for drastic change, possibly cashless, and all very much vulnerable electronic processes. And if you believe all that is safe and secure, I bet you were among the 50 million whose financial and internet data is now in some nefarious hands! It is indeed "Orwellian"...Look it up!

Quote: But that is the reason they SHOULD remain If we need to rely on coins as a significant way to educate our children about our history then we have lost the war. Two of our most important leaders have already been removed from coins, Franklin and Eisenhower. It will be okay.

There will be no substantive changes to the circulating coinage designs anytime soon, coins will be obsolete by the time any meaningful changes are made. There is too much political animus around for any real change to be made in our change. It just isn't as big an issue to be put on the table.
As far as dreams go I would love to see a total reimagination of the coinage. Designs on all coins would be representative of Liberty, no real people depicted. The reverse can be depictions of monuments and buildings or designs about America.

That is true, but it is also where the Jefferson nickel and Washington quarter came from. (Only the designs we actually got on the coins were NOT the designs that won the contests.)

To me coins and their familiar faces provide for a stable life. Keep them as they are...it hasn't hurt the collecting family.
