I'm responding to the title question from a more practical aspect. Some of my comments have been address before, often many times. 1. Get rid of the CENT. It has little practical value and costs more to make than it's face value. 2. Get rid of the nickel OR make it of a less expensive alloy. It also costs more to make than it's face value. 3. At a minimum redesign all circulating coins so that their values are more obvious. Non-US tourists often have trouble determining the face value of US coins. The numbers 5, 10 and 25 should appear on the appropriate coins. 4. I'll leave it to others to haggle over appropriate designs. |

If we get rid of the cent...what are the presses gonna punch out? That's a lot of production volume and worker's time.

You know, when I saw the profits the mint makes on the other coins, it does not bother me we have the lowest denomination coins still.
Although I sentimentally hate the idea, I agree the cent is not practical and should be eliminated from a production cost and practical standpoint.
I have said it before, but I would like to see something that will not happen - PM base and resetting of value with the PM base. So a new penny/design (classic!) would be worth a present (let's say) dime. Other coins would be upscaled as well.
But too many officials would lose money and power though, so it won't happen.

More profitable...stop minting the cents and sell them only to collectors for 49.95...great profit for the mint...great ripoff for collectors.
