Thanks for posting your coins Arkie...Very nice..

Your first two Rupees show an interesting couple of differences...

Coin 1..1941 Rupee..31.0mm dia..
Obverse..2nd Head..Small rim decoration..Security edge..
Reverse..Large legend..Small rim decoration..Raised dot below bottom lotus flower ..Mumbai Mint
Only minted at Mumbai..111,480,000...KM-556

Coin 2..1942 Rupee..31.0mm dia..
Obverse..Small 2nd Head...Large rim decoration..Security edge..
Reverse..Small legend..Large rim decoration..Raised dot below bottom lotus flower ..Mumbai Mint
Only minted at Mumbai..244,500,001...KM-557

In 1942 the Mumbai mint changed some of the design features..
1..Rim decoration was made larger..
2..Still used the 2nd head with short trefoils but the whole portrait was made smaller..
3..Reverse legend was made smaller..Lots of small detail changes of the floral designs.

Your first fractional coin is very nice...
The 1943 Half Rupee has a unique anomaly in that the 3 has a broken lower curve in the date, having a dot in between..The engravers made a mistake...

Obverse..Small 2nd Head..Large rim decoration..Security edge..
Reverse..Small legend..Large rim decoration..Raised L below bottom lotus flower ..Lahore
Mint..9,000,000...KM-552

Folks, there are numerous more variations in this series. One needs to start by denominations if you really want to understand it properly.

I agree with what your saying Director, maybe for more experienced collectors, but I DONT want to deter people from posting any coin they feel is relevant to this thread. In my opinion it makes a thread much richer and more interesting...As per your 1938 proof coin and Arkies George VI silvers.......

The idea of this thread is to give a general overlook of certain year sets, aimed more at beginners or non collectors who are just interested, rather than a drudge of the same denomination variations found on the Internet...I hope its working....

That said I do want to continue with each year set and will add an index post so people can see what coins in my collection have been presented in the posts before...

Index 1....Coins shown before this post from my collection...

George VI 1940 Full set
1/2 Pice
1/4 Anna
1 Anna
2 Anna
1/4 Rupee
1/2 Rupee
1 Rupee

Princely States Bahawalpur 1940
1/2 Pice
1/4 Anna

Victoria 1862..
1/12 Anna
1/2 Pice

I will now continue with the Victoria 1862 set...

Continuing with the 1862 set...The next denomination is the 1/4 Anna....

This is quite a standard, common looking coin that everyone sees BUT believe it or not there are six variations...

1/4 Anna = 1/64 Indian Rupee.

In 1862 there were three mints running for the 1/4 Anna,
NOTE..The 1862 date was used without changing for 11 years so the next dated 1/4 Anna coin is 1874..(As per the 1/12 Anna).
Mumbai (Bombay)..Minted 1/4 Anna coins from 1862-1889,
Kolkata (Calcutta)..Minted 1/4 Anna coins from 1862-1901
Chennai (Madras)...Minted 1/4 Anna coins only for the 11 year run of the 1862 dated coin.

Two types of Bust were used...See Ref#1 detail.

Type A -Bust 1.. The front of the dress has 4 Jabots/panels. The bottom panel has a single flower just right of center. A small incuse "v" may appear on the point of the shoulder or a small raised "v" at the bottom center of the bust.

Type B -Bust 2.. The front of the dress has 4 Jabots/panels. The bottom panel has flowers to the left and the right. A small raised "v" appears at the centre bottom of the bust.
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

Also the details in the floral design of the dress are different for the two types. E.g., check just to the right of the lowest Jabot panel.See Ref#2 detail.
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

The 1/4 Anna coin has two Reverse designs...See Ref#3 detail...

Reverse I - There are two leaves, one either side of the date.
Reverse II - There is a single leaf below the center of the date.
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

Kolkata (Calcutta) Mint..KM#467
Bust 1 (A)...Reverse 1...26.2/26.3 dia..(No incuse or raised V).99,504,000 See Ref#1 detail.
Bust 1 (A)...Reverse 1...26.2/26.3 dia..Raised V bottom centre of bust.10,654,000 See Ref#1 detail.
Bust 2 (B)...Reverse 2...25.3/25.4 dia...Raised V bottom centre of bust...178,731,000 See Ref#1 detail.

Mumbai (Bombay) Mint..KM#467
Bust 1 (A)...Reverse 1...25.5 dia...Incuse V on point of shoulder.32,149,000 See Ref#1 detail
Bust 1 (A)...Reverse 1...25.5 dia...Raised dot below date...This is a Key Date coin with a mintage of only 2,366,000 See Ref#4 detail

Chennai (Madras) Mint..KM#467
Bust 1 (A)...Reverse 1...25.5 dia (No incuse or raised V).186,227,000 See Ref#1 detail

Thanks jbuck...Im trying to make the breakdown of each denomination as user friendly as possible. I dont know about anyone else but Ive always found it easier to determine differences in detail/variations etc via visual representations. Many collectors have probably got some of these coins knocking around in their collections and hopefully these theads will allow them to fine tune their attributions to a specific Mint or variation type...

@ Director...Wow! What a beautiful coin..Lovely detailed big chunk of Copper...

Im assuming this is a Kolkata Mint type A/I proof coin?

This nicely leads me onto the next 1862 denomination.....Paul

Yes, C mint and A/I alright, but graded by NGC as a business strike, MS64 BN. Looks like a specimen strike at-least, if not proof, to me. It is much more superior in hand when compared to the business strikes (MS) of the period.

Moreover, I have the full copper set, all have similar pristine look, like this big fella', but all graded as business strike.

@Director..As you know Ive only ever collected standard circulated coinage (Business strike) hence my limited knowledge of restrike and Proof coins.....But because of your posts Ive started looking at these type coins and finding it very interesting, also surprisingly not as expensive as I first thought so thanks for sharing..

Its interesting what Wiki has to say about business strike coins...Basically that a high grade Business strike coin can in fact be more valuable than its Proof counterpart...This is because whereas proof coins are almost always carefully preserved by their owners (low mintage and aimed at collectors), business strikes usually are not, as they were mass produced and are primarily meant to be used as pocket change, not collected.

Do you agree? Any thoughts?

Yes, I mostly do agree. However, there are a few denominations and years where the original proof is always more expensive and very seldom offered. Restrikes, not so much.
