1862 ....Next denomination is the 1/2 Anna...1/2 Anna = 2 Pice = 1/32 Indian Rupee.. Coins minted from 1862 through to 1874 all have the date 1862. The next dated 1/2 Anna is 1875 and the last 1/2 Anna coin minted was in 1877... In general this denomination was heavily circulated and the majority of them are usually found quite worn,especially the portrait side...The price increases considerably if well detailed.. In 1862 there were four variations using two types of Bust..Legend "Victoria Queen".See Ref#1 detail. Bust A - The front of the dress has 4-1/2 Jabots/panels. The bottom, incomplete panel has no flowers. Bust B - The front of the dress has 4 Jabots/panels. Also the Floral Designs differ..See Ref #1 Please note.. There was a Bust C type but this was not used on the 1862 seris..  There were two types of reverse... Reverse I - The "1" in the date has a slanted top. The word "ANNA" has narrow spacing. Note the position of the A's in "ANNA" almost immediately below the "H" and "F" of HALF. Reverse II - The "1" in the date has a flat top. The word "ANNA" has wide spacing. So what are the differences between a restrike vs an original. Is that something that can be described and then some photos shown?

@scopru....Restrikes and Proof coins arent my area of collecting maybe Director will give more details... What I do know is that Proof coins were produced purely for collectors.Small numbers were minted using new dies,basically to produce a perfect coin..The variants used ,as far as I know were no, were not different to the standard regular issued coins, just a very high quality. For example This specimen Proof coin was lot 1409 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,645.  I dont know what Director paid for his Business strike coin but probably in the hundreds? His coin is still beautifully detailed with good surfaces but you can see a few small dings around the edge etc Edited by Palouche

@Arkie I Assume your posting your coins because you want them attributed? I hope the work I did on your last coins helped? Your first coin is an 1882 A1-dot Bust A..Reverse type I..Raised dot below date Mumbai (Bombay) Mint.56,397,287 Only Bust A types were used in 1882..Distinguishing feature is it has 3 3/4 Jabots/panels in the front of the dress... There were 3 types of reverse used in 1882 see Ref# 1.. Yours is Reverse I - The top flower is open with long, curved petals. The "1" in the date has a flat top.The flower to the left of the date has 5 petals.  |

Arkies second coin is....1887 Half Rupee A/I - "C" incuse K#491 Bust type A...Reverse type I..Kolkata (Calcutta) Mint..2,275,000 There were only 2 types minted in 1887 A/I - "C" incuse Calcutta Mint 2,275,000 K#491 A/II - "B" raised Bombay Mint 407,000 ? K#491 Type A - The front of the dress has 4 panels. Type B - The front of the dress has 4-1/2 This type is apparently seen only on coins of 1874-1877, 1881 and 1882 Type C - Similar to Type B, but the dress has 4-3/4 panels and the floral design of the dress is different. This type is apparently unique to 1862. The floral design of the dress is different for all three types. See Ref# 1.  There were 2 types of reverse used..See Ref# 2..  Edited by Palouche

1862...We know move into the silver coinage the next denomination is 2 Annas..These were produced using 0.917 silver at 1.46 grams. 2 Annas = 1/8 Indian Rupee In 1862 there were three mints running for the 2 Annas..There are no mintmarks and can only be distiguished by size of diametre.. NOTE..The 1862 date was used without changing for 11 years so the next dated 2 Annas coin is 1874..(As per the 1/12 Anna and 1/4 Anna). Two Bust Types were used throughout the whole 2 Annas series 1862-1901 Note .. Only Bust A was used for the 1862 date series..See Ref# 1.. Bust Type A - The front of the dress has 4 panels. The bottom panel has 3 leaves at the left and a small flower at the upper right. Bust Type B - The front of the dress has 3-1/2 panels. The bottom incomplete panel has only 3 leaf tops showing.  There were 2 types of Reverse..See Ref# 2.. Reverse I - The top flower is large and has two large petals above its base that are long and curve downward. Reverse II - The top flower is small and has two large petals above its base that are short and horizontal.  Note.. There is a slight unique variation of the Kolkata (Calcutta) mint..Bottom flower has long petals or short..See below..  1862 Two Annas K#469 Bust A..Reverse I - 15.3-15.4mm..Edge plain..Kolkata (Calcutta) 29,653,000 Including both variations above... Reading this thread has been very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I have just one British India coin, a 1943 1/2 Anna. It's nickel brass and square in shape.

Its a Calcutta mint B/III 0/0...Nice coin! Bust B...Reverse III......Rare The reverse III was only used on 2 coins from 1862 the OP coin and A/III 0/0  I will be posting an in depth description of the 1862 Rupee... A collecting area all of its own with 42 known varieties... |
