I think that's a doubled die, shifted upward. I definitely see a lot of notching that resembles a DD. A good one too. It could also be a plating issue or an artifact of awful glare, but I don't think it's MD.

I think it's both MD and DDD. Note the die flow lines right by the devices. You can also see the tell-tale shelf-like doubling that is Machine Doubling. Just a spender. I also don't think Class II doubled dies can happen on shield cents. Not a single example has ever been found.

Myself I would keep it. If it's true that DD and error coins are a very rare event with these new coins,then who knows 20 years from now. Most of us will be out of a hobby we enjoy.

It is Die Deterioration. (Die wear) Note on the affected areas they are always in the direction of the rim area?
