Quote: PCGS does not offer the "Set" designation. PCGS definitely labels the Kennedy as the Apollo Set, not sure about the clad half.

PCGS definitely labels the Kennedy as the Apollo Set, not sure about the clad half. Correct but the issue is with the Apollo half being distinguished from the 400,000 available. The Kennedy is ONLY available in the set so no unopened box needed. PCGS does not attribute the Apollo as being from the set. Here is a set of two with the Earth Rising label. The AMF label is also available

Fox, Are those pictures an actual for sale photo? or just two pictures you put together? Seems strange that the Apollo is an MS instead of a PRF but, I do agree in that none of the labels I've seen on ebay for the Apollo Half indicate "Set" in them like the Kennedy does. So, if a label collector wants both coins to say "Set" it looks like they have to go with NGC (or ANACS?) and are out of luck if they're a PCGS label collector.

The Apollo half is from Denver so it would be MS

Quote: Can't decide whether or not it's worth sending them off to be graded. Suggestions please? What's your intent for getting them graded? Do you hope to re-sell all 3? re-sell 2 and keep 1 for yourself? keep all for yourself? or what? If any form of re-sale is in the mix, then figure out your total cost for grading (including whatever special labels or designations you want, they usually cost extra), add in the cost of the sets from Mint and then look at what similar sets have sold for (not offered for sale) on ebay. Take the average sold price x .871 (to account for ebay and PayPal fees), subtract an additional 30c PayPal fee, subtract $4 for shipping and see if you can make a profit If you sell all 3 sets, you'll probably lose money if none grade as 70, break even if 1 grades as 70 and make money if 2 or 3 grade as 70.

IMHO it would be unusual to offer for sale the UNC Apollo paired with the PRF Kennedy, this is why I was wondering if the pics FM posted were actual for sale photos, or just something he put together to show the Apollo label didn't have the word "set" in it.

The commemorative in the half dollar set is a business strike, not proof. If you sent in the set, what you see in that photo is what you would get (assuming the labels are correct).

Duh, you are right. I do not know what I was thinking. It is my own fault for ordering a business strike dollar with the set, so I would have one uncirculated coin and one proof coin. I am now confusing which is which. As penalty, I should order the proof dollar next week. Assuming I do not spend all of my money at the coin show. Carry on.

I saved that pic from the PCGS site a little while ago...damned if I can find it there now ...I did find this interesting set designation by PCGS but can't find out how to get it....might be a private dealer thing with a signature..obviously FDI would eliminate every normal Joe...

I'm sure you all know that it cost $10.00 (NGC) for the early/first release designation. Since the Apollo half set sold out before the 30 day deadline that seems to me to be a waste of $10.00 for each coin.
