Ive seen one like this before but cant put my finger on it. Ive looked for hours unsuccessfully perhaps Ive got the time period wrong? The eagle, font, dssign, etc. feel like post rev./ pre mint (1776-1792). There is some gold colored metal in the center and a circular shape is raised a bit on the back. Center is roughly like the eye shape but I dont think its that. Size wise its slightly larger than a modern penny. Design on back is eagle over U.S over wreath. No visable date. Any ideas?
Not a button but maybe thats where Ive seen this design. During confederation it was a free for all w/ coinage. Looks to me like a british half pence that was softened and stamped. Could even be a counterfeit from the period. Alot of odd varieties from this time so it might take some real detective work to place it
It is a button. The concentric circles in the first image are typical of button backs. But this is very much worth investigating and if it's any help I'd place it as early to mid C19th.
