John Quincy Adams Dollar Speared Bowtie

Steve1066 New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 07/27/2008 9:07 pm My recent purchase of John Quincy Adams dollars arrived this week. After searching them I found what appears to be a heavy die scratch or gouge that is interesting and very visible. It extends from the rim through the "D" in president and ends in the bowtie. I've also noticed a lighter die scratch in the "J" in John. Could this be an error? Opinions, please? Out of 500 searched, I found 6 with these identical marks. halfabustisbetter Pillar of the Community United States 1984 Posts	Posted 07/27/2008 9:33 pm Looks like it might be a die crack. A die crack is a mark appearing on a coin, usually in the form of a fine raised line or small blob. This happens because the coin die which struck the coin had a crack or small break in it that got transferred to the planchet during striking. Although I have no idea what the premium would be on a prez $ die crack (if there is one), it's a nice find. Report this Post to the Staff

I've acquired a decent number of Lincoln cents (both Wheaties and LCMs) that have die cracks and they look similar to what is pictured on the JQA dollars above. Report this Post to the Staff
