OldGold,
Maybe this dealer keeps an outdated Coins price listing just to back up his lowball offers on customer coins!

Or, it could be a misprint in a current issue. I've noticed a couple of typos in the Numismatic News monthly price list from time to time. I think you got a good deal on your Classic quarter eagle. It's nice!

Jaobler, thank you for the nice comment. I do also think I got a good deal on it, which is why I was surprised the price was so low on the Coins Magazine. I love the coin, I think it's a great piece. Funny. I took it into the coin shop there, and asked him "What do you think of this coin?" he said he wasn't interested in buying it because of the contact marks/blemishes on the obverse and that he didn't have any buyers for it. I told him I didn't want to sell it I just wanted his opinion on it. Then he took out an old copy of Coins Magazine when I asked his opinion on its value and he said $12,000. I told him I paid $1200 for it. This gave me a little chuckle as I pointed out he was looking up the price for the 1834 Turban head in AU50/53!

He then pointed out that in the Coins Magazine it was only worth $986 (I Can't remember the exact amount, but it was in the $900's) and that I overpaid. I pointed out to him the fact that the price listed was for AU50 condition coins, and that mine was a AU53. He told me that the next step up from AU50 was MS60. (I think He was ref erring to the grade in the magazine, it went from AU50 to MS60 as the next grade up; there was no inbetween AU53, 55, 58, etc)

I told him the magazine was probably outdated and asked if he had the current one. He did. He took it out, it was another Coins Magazine, and sure enough, the price was the same (or very close) still in the $900's. Very odd I thought.

Well, I took a look at my latest issue of COINS (August, not likely the most recent copy) and it didn't even list quarter eagles in it but then again, it is not nearly as comprehensive as some of the other price guides. I pulled out my most recent issue of Coin Prices (September) and it listed your coin at $965 in AU 50. Significantly different than Coin Values which list AU 50 at $2000. I prefer Coin Values over the other price guides that I have personally as Coin Prices (Coins) is bi-monthly and Coin Values ( Coin World) is monthly. Also, Coin Values updates their online value listings weekly.

My mistake, he had coin prices not Coins Magazine. Why is it only $965 in AU? Isn't that a bit on the cheap side?
Seems less than wholesale.
