Damaged by a coin counter/wrapper machine or maybe a vending machine like a pony ride for kids kinda thing.

with John1. Circular gouges like that are usually from some type of coining machine.

The mint mark is filled but it is common for the year though.
It's difficult to find a 1979 in mint state for some reason.
