Day 11Diana 1892 subject created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
American Art Treasures Medal
(sculptor of medal unknown to me)
This medal is practically never seen offered for sale.
If you see one, I suggest you think about getting it before I find it or I'll add another to my collection.

I have only ever seen this single example for sale outside of complete sets.
Recently I found American Gothic by Grant Wood, another elusive medal from this set,
but this one, without a doubt, is easily one of my 12 favorites items in my entire collection.
It comes from the
1975 Franklin Mint Treasures of American Art 100 medal set.
This is a very large medal at 45 mm, and it is close to 1 troy oz. of sterling silver.
I think it is beautifully done and of course, why not?
It shows the famous sculpture of
Augustus Saint-Gaudens titled
Diana of the Tower.
She is known in Roman mythology as
Diana the Huntress or
Diana Goddess of The Hunt or simply, in Greek mythology,
Artemis.
She is usually seen with a bow in hand, a companion hound or two and a deer, dead or alive.
I posted about this acquisition here
