My bank's stash of rolls ran out. In all I got 4 rolls, unfortunately from a prior collection since the rolls were labeled with a single date and were exactly as labeled. So out of 80 coins I got maybe 5 dates due to some misplacd coins. Luckily I needed one to complete the circulated set. Now what to do with 40 1971 D Ikes. I was hoping to find some silver but no luck.

Spend 'em at McDonalds or start leaving them as tips if you eat at nicer places than McDonalds :)

If a woman can register her dog to vote, why can't I charter my own bank just to order some I

You can, but you'll find that it would be very difficult and expensive to do so. (You'll probably find there are minimum assets requirements into at least six figures, plus all kinds of paperwork and other legal requirements.) You'll probably find that it will cost you well over $100K in oder to be able to order Ikes from the Fed. (And then with shipping charges you'll probably end up paying $1.05 each for mostly common baggy Ikes.)

I will assume that you are giving this information for the benefit of those that might actually contemplate the idea, and you knew that I was in no way seriously considering this.

I got 63 of them from my bank the other day. I have to say that I believe they are the ugliest American coin I have ever owned, but they sure are fun to spend. None of them were worth keeping at any rate.

What you say?

Just messing with you.

I wonder how I would see the Ike if it did not have such a sentimental appeal to me. Would I find them repulsive?

Nah, I'd still love them!

I have to admit they aren't the best looking coin, but not the worst.

I saw my first Ike when my grandfather who used to go to Vegas every year during the 70s & early 80's and one time brought back a bunch of them for me and my brothers.

Imagine the first impression someone in grade school would have. The shear size, let alone the denomination, of the coin was impressive indeed.

I have been an Ike fan ever since. Feels like you actually got something of substance in your hand.

Hmm - I've picked up a few IKEs from my friendly tellers over the years. Have about 2 tubes worth. How much is a bag or box of IKE's? My teller that use to always order my boxes moved out of state but I still keep in contact with her. Even helped her move. She is back to working in a bank and as head teller. Think I'll email her now to see if she can order them or not in her area.

Condor: Why do you ahve to order $100,000 in Ikes at a time? I thought they could be obtained in $1000 increments?

Has anyone been successful ordering them? I asked my branch to order them several months ago and no luck. But I don't know exactly why- they didn't bother to order them, or they just weren't in stock at the Fed.

That figure was in regards to setting up a bank charter to be able to directly order from the Fed- it has nothing to do with Ikes specifically.

Biokemist got it.

I pondered (jokingly) chartering my own bank just to be able to order Eisenhower dollars from the fed. Conder was pointing out that it would be a real expensive hassle.

I had my bank look into it for me last week. The results were that the Chicago FRB does not have bags of Ikes, but the bank is able to get me 20-30 loose ones, so at least I wont come away with nothing.

I'm glad someone else had a bank look into that. I've now asked at the 5 banks I have accounts at and get the basic same answer. No such thing at the Fed in downtown Chicago. Two of the bank people I asked keep on smiling at me during the conversation though. Makes me wonder what they are thinking.
I'm in the Chicago area all the time and not far from the Federal Researve so if anyone is willing to join me, we could break in and get all those bags of Ikes for nothing. Then just let them say there aren't any. Then they'll be right because I'll have them all.
If you ever go by there you would notice they even have guards behind the place on Wells Street. Wonder what they do if and when a car backfires.

nod2003,
As this thread points out, it is difficult to almost impossible to get any Ikes from a bank any more, either due to lack of supply or willful ignorance/indifference by bank employees. Most Ikes are sold for a small premium, my local coin shop has a bucket of them- purchased at $1.10 and sold for $1.25 so almost no profit margin involved. Uncirculated Ikes will easily sell for a premium but unless they are high grade(which is hard to find in Ikes) you will not get much more than a few dollars each(not counting the NIFC silver issues)
