Is this a RPM or machine damage?

Question: So what are you seeing? Flat or raised on that area? If the area is raised and enlarged, then it is a RPM. If it is flat and normal sized and show reduction of the mintmark, it is MD. Note the right side of the mintmark? That is the width is should be. Note the width on the left side of the mintmark? Enlarged, or reduced from the normal size of the mintmark?

Coop I am a new to this but I was/am leaning towards MD because of the flat shelf. The only thing that confuses me is when I go into Vista Variety and look at the year of coin and I see what appears to me to be a flat shelf on this RPM listed dime. I'm sure there is something I'm missing. it's probably like ginseng hunting where when first go out hunting about every plant looks like ginseng until you finally find one and then nothing but ginseng looks like ginseng.

On that RPM you show in the picture, the RPM is located to the south: The doubling to West, as you said, is Machine Doubling. -CH27

That is an apt description, however unless all the rpm's that have have that Machine Doubling, that is a terrible picture to use as an example.

I think it is a good example, because it shows both MD and a RPM on the same coin. John1

Just like on double dies, Machine Doubling can affect RPMs as well. (Possible that this example is the only example submitted) I would have included in the description for this die, and mentioned the Machine Doubling that is present on this coin. Also, that the the MD is not part of the variety.
