I found this 1983 Lincoln Cent with a very glossy finish. Its so glossy that I suspected that it was dipped in some sort of lacer. The reverse side of it has this white stuff on it that I couldn't get off. It's like it is part of the coin. Looks like the pictures aren't doing it any justice as to how gloss this cent it.

That sure looks like glue. Many coins succum to this, mostly using folders. When you upgrade, you're left

with a stretched out hole that needs a dollip of Elmers to keep the piece in place.

to the CCF!

Maybe part of a homemade display? Polished the coin on the obverse and glued to a poster board? Even though the obverse is buffed to a shine the reverse seems to be normal under the glue. It's hard to tell what may have happened, but it didn't leave the mint like that.

Thanks for the info. I was scratching my head on why it was so glossy. Must of been buffed like you said. Since it is also very smooth feeling

Or some type of epoxy. PSD. Not a plus for the coin. Somebody bored in the garage.

Getting glue off a cent worth only face value? Why?

If it was a white glue like Elmer's, it should be water solvable.
If it's a lacer, it would take paint thinner.

p.s. I wouldn't recommend using paint thinner on your coins (ever).

Just wondering if there was a nonabrasive way of doing it. Besides the white it's the prettiest 1983 cent I have ever held in my hands. But I don't think there will be a way for getting it off that will be worth the effort

I was able to get it off with nail polish remover and elbow grease. Whatever that white stuff was tarnished the copper coating.

That is the illusive 1983 LMC Pregnant jumping rat one cent coin. Only one other such coin is known to exist. Whatever you do, do not attempt to remove the coating.
