I inherited this beautiful Penny 1844 (34 mm) about 25 years ago. I'm foreign, and unfortunately I don't know much at all about Brittish copper coins. Could definitely need some help. I definitely see a lot of knowledge in this forum.
(1) The coin has some wear and "normal" scratches, but it also has a kind of scratches/fissures in various places, on both sides. From what I understand it couldn't be die scratches, as they wouldn't create a fissure, rather the opposite, right? Would be really interesting to know what these fissures are.
(2) Is this perhaps an established variety, and is there a variety list available somewhere?
(3) According to British standards, would this coin classify as Fine or Very Fine? Any thoughts regarding value in general?
I have picked the copper Victorian penny varieties page, but there are many more in the site. There are not many varieties listed for 1844, but I think yours is the "slant up tails on 4s" version. I would give Fine on UK grading. Value will depend on how badly someone wants one! Rarity on the webpage is given as S for Seldom. I would think £20 to £30 would be reasonable.
As you know Paddy I'm usually in agreement with you regarding grade, this time though I think Fine is a bit stingy. Look at the reverse, the shield and drapery detail are all there, the face and breastplate likewise are still present, and, there's lots of remaining hair detail on the obverse too.
You are probably right Hogarth. I think I downgraded it a bit because I find the lamination faults unattractive. Others, I know, like to collect this sort of error...
