The UK was not the only place to get Decimal currency in 1971. Their closest neighbours also changed that day. The Irish got an identical sized set of copper coins.

In Pingin as opposed to New Pence, these coins were also minted by The Royal Mint in Llantrisant (And who says former enemies can't be friends).

The coins showed Celtic inspired birds from Irish folklore designed by Gabriel Hayes (She).

These are set coins and sadly have not survived 50 years untarnished. They are beautiful though.

You will see many more Irish coins from me as we head backwards through time.

Issued before Decimal day, these coins circulated as being worth 10 scilling and 1 scilling before hand.

The 5p reuses the design from the old scilling and the 50p a new denomination used the starling which appeared on the feorling which had been discontinued.

A later post will show a Irish feorling.

1970 United Kingdom 10 pence - this coin circulated as two shillings until decimal currency was adopted on February 15, 1971. These larger-size 10p coins (same size as the old florin, which remained in circulation) were replaced by the present smaller 10p in 1992.

A 5p and 10p coin of the Decimal era issued before Decimal day.
Like NumisRob said they became obselete in 1990 and 1992 when replaced with smaller steel coins.

Just realised the Americans have really long daylight savings and the new day has arrived earlier than usual.

My first offering for the 1960s is this Jamaican set of stunners

Jamaica became decimal in 1969 and issued this new set of coins which featured nice designs of flowers, birds and animals and a special $1 coin showing Bustamante, the first Prime Minister.

The currency did not become hyper inflated until the 1990s.

Again its more rule breaking with a set, but these are beautiful coins - would you not agree.

Nice set, Princetane!

The UK issued the 50p coin for the first time in 1969, replacing the 10 shilling note. It was the world's first 7-sided coin and was immediately nicknamed the 'ten bob bit'.

A 1969 Proof set of New Zealand coins featuring the $1 showing a reproduction of Cook's map from his 1769/70 circumnavigation of New Zealand. the gleaming dollar and the 59 cent have "Cook Bicentenary 1769 - 1969" on the edges. The rest of the coins gleam too. Cases were sold separately!

The 10 cents is still marked shilling as to help people changing over from Sterling currency.

Less details of reverses as many of my coins back to the 1950s will have either this Machin reverse or the Mary Gillick one!
