This may be my favorite piece from my Düren collection. The old views of the city are one reason, but mostly because I assume it's a proof. On every other note of this type I have seen, there is a serial number on the reverse, in the box where the star punches are.

Super- yes, this is a 'musterscheine' or to us, a specimen piece. It's missing its serial number AND it has a cancellation mark (the 3 hole punch cancellations in this example).

Those are neat varieties. I don't have any where the notes' artwork is different, but I do have some with different issuing dates and/or Oberburgermeister signatures. And a couple notes have a number of different letter blocks on them. Not sure what they denote, I suppose individual printing runs.

I've got a nice Hungarian note with misaligned colors, but it's at home in Moscow and I don't recall if I've ever made a pic of it.

A very slight misalignment. It occurs a lot with notgeld. Some of the misalignments can be up to 50% of the note but more usually about 1-5mm off line.

.....it's something more than that...... There was a small breakage in the printing plate which was then rectified........but incorrectly (not mirrored). Today, we see this error in these variant pieces that state 'Aunfzig' rather than 'Funfzig'

Quote: .....it's something more than that...... Other than the funky looking F in FUNFZIG, I am not seeing anything. I think the offsetting is obscuring it. Edit to add: I should have refreshed the tab to see your edit before commenting. Seems I did see it.

Things like this 'anomaly' piece can be picked up cheaply by collectors, if they are lucky. It makes the collecting fun when you get 'better' pieces added to your collection for little money.

So true. The specimen note I shared above was gotten for very little. I can't remember exactly anymore, but IIRC it was one in a lot of 5+ notes that I purchased for, I'm sure, no more than $30. Most likely less than that. When I saw it, it immediately caught my eye. The seller gave no indication that they realized it was "special".
