Earle42 Bedrock of the Community United States 10058 Posts	Posted 03/26/2020 2:30 pm Machine Doubling - common to find and adds no value. With MD the die that hits the coin planchet "bounces" from being a bit loose. The result is a flat and shelf-like doubled area. I tend to think of it as something of a smearing that causes the doubling just b/c when first learning it helped me to discern the flat appearance the machine minting the coin made. A true doubled die results from a doubled letter/number/etc. actually being engraved into the die that makes the coin. That is why the term "doubled die" is used. Search this forum for how to tell MD form an actual doubled die if you want more info. A LOT of useful information on discerning the two is here.
